OPUS PRIMO
"SIMPLY A BANK"
it was said at the time, but of course not just any old one. It was to be made of concrete to replace the wooden predecessors. After all, wooden benches usually have a short lifespan and if you want to extend this on golf courses, you have to move the wooden benches to a dry place over the winter. Of course, this means a lot of work at the beginning and end of the year, which you wouldn't have to do with a concrete bench. In addition, concrete lasts many times longer. So you only buy them once! Difficulties were of course also quickly found: Concrete is heavy, thick and not particularly stylish. The shapes are usually angular due to the simplicity of the formwork, so I completely reformulated my expectations of my bench.

LIGHT
enough to be transported by two people and to avoid damaging the lawn and ground.
Heavy
enough to prevent them from simply being stolen or moved around.
THIN
enough that it is not disruptive and can visually blend in with its surroundings.

as a shape to match the soft contours of nature and golf.
Stability was a particular challenge. The reinforcement was to be used to support the bending tension, which would retain its shape when the bench was loaded. However, with a concrete thickness of only 3 cm chosen for my bench, this was a problem. The concrete cover to the iron would be far too small, so stainless steel reinforcement? - This would have worked, but as the moulds were to be filled on edge, the reinforcement could not be held in its intended position. The iron could have been anywhere, but not where it was supposed to be! Another idea was a recipe with fibres, which would have been the most obvious solution, but far from it. The fibres impair the flowability of the concrete enormously and would have been reluctant to cover the long filling distance. So all the work remained with the concrete after all. The material that can withstand a lot of pressure but forgives little bending.
So before my concrete bench project failed due to a lack of reinforcement, I developed a formula that would enable us to realise the bench in its final form and still create increasingly thin components that were resistant. The result was UHPC-ultra high performance concrete - without fibres. Once this hurdle had been overcome, all that remained was to cast the bench successfully, which we finally managed to do masterfully after a number of attempts. That was the birth of OPUS PRIMO - the FIRST WORK in Latin. From this mould, the OPUS collection was finally created in 2015 - a series of elegant furniture that can be easily transformed and combined.
